El Dorado

John Wayne has been one of my favorite actors for years now. He teams up with Robert Mitchum in El Dorado, and Paramount has released this movie in their Centennial Collection series. 1966 was the year this movie first came out, and it has withstood the test of time. The acting in this movie is top notch, and the humor in this gunslinging western is all over the place. The main storyline deals with ruthless cattle barons, and crooked “businessmen.” The sheriff retreats into a bottle, and his friend (Duke) knows how to win in a gun fight. The main problem John Wayne’s character has is a bullet in his back near his spine. This problem occurs at the most inopportune times.

El Dorado has that rustic western look and feel to it. A lot of the action happens in saloons or in the streets of towns. There are some scenes on horses and out in the wilderness. The majority of the characters are dressed appropriately. There is one short scene with a woman showing cleavage. There is a lot of gunfire, and some other deaths (i.e. a knife in the chest). Plenty of characters die in El Dorado, but there is very little blood.

Classic films like El Dorado have a real respectful manner in the conversations. There are very few bad words in this movie, and on these DVDs. The writing in El Dorado is excellent, and I love the humor. Certain characters talk about wanting a drink quite often, so be prepared for that. There is a wonderful lesson to the evils of alcohol in El Dorado, and some of the damages it causes. The sheriff does wind up cleaning up his act and becoming respectable again.

El Dorado has an entire disc of special features that gives all kinds of behind the scenes information. This includes commentary, galleries, remembering John Wayne, ride boldly ride, and a few more. Because of all the extra content I feel this version of El Dorado is worth the entrance fee.

El Dorado is a real powerful western that shows current films what makes a good movie. Yes there is some violence, but it is almost always shocking. To me this is one of the good ones, even with its family friendly issues. The menu screens are easy to move around on, and the respectful manner between hero and villain goes a long ways. I really like the poetry that is incorporated in El Dorado.

El Dorado can spark some much needed conversations in families. Alcohol is the main lesson in this movie. Children should be warned of the devil in the bottle and how it can ruin your life. There are also lessons about life in the past (even if it is not completely historically accurate). I wish they made more movies like this one today.
