Dragonball Evolution
SCORE: 66
I was very excited to hear about a live action Dragonball movie. I read some of the movie reviews and noticed that a lot of reviewers despised this movie. I waited until it came out on DVD, and when the editor in chief told me Family Friendly Gaming could get a copy, I was all over it. Dragonball Evolution starts with a teenage Goku who is learning from his grandfather, and promises not to fight. Being trained to fight, and avoiding it when bullies need to be taught a lesson at high school is difficult for the fledgling hero. He is given a Dragonball and told to keep it safe. Piccolo is hunting the seven dragonballs so he can be granted a wish. Goku must stop him, and also defeat his own inner demon (literally).
If you like martial arts movies then you will appreciate some of the fight scenes in Dragonball Evolution. The most impressive one to me was when Chi Chi fought an evil version of herself. The later in the film it is, the more special attacks from the characters chi is used. This is a Chinese mystical belief if you were not versed in it. Certain female characters wear cleavage showing attire, but it does not go beyond that.
Dragonball Evolution has a few bad words spread out throughout the movie. I was surprised at how tame this movie is in that regard. There is a lot of dialogue about releasing your inner power, and being one with yourself and your enemy. The music in this movie helped it flow, but did not stand out for me.
20th Century Fox included a nice array of special features. There is some content in certain special features that will bother many of our readers (like the gyrations and attire in the music video). I personally enjoyed the features that shows how they did things, the deleted scenes, and the gag reel.
Dragonball Evolution has a very intelligent design in the layout of the screens. The story is one where the hero must save the world from a recently awakened evil. Dragonball Evolution drew me in, even though I found certain parts to be corny.
There is a definite
eastern religious flavor to Dragonball Evolution. None of us will be
lighting lampposts with an inner power, so it fits into fantasy in my
opinion. The light love story included is a nice touch. I only wish
Dragonball Evolution had explained more backgrounds and motives. For
example I have no idea what Piccolo would wish for and why. Would it
have been that bad?
