Dewys Adventure

Last year, Konami released Elebits, a game where you play a young child that captures Elebits. I had the wonderful opportunity to review the game. This past year (September 18th, 2007) Konami’s team that worked on Elebits made the game Dewy’s Adventure. I have to say, I’m impressed with Konami and their effort on the Wii. What Elebits lacked graphically, Dewy makes up for it. The evil Don Hedron has descended upon the peaceful forest and it’s up to Dewy, a small droplet of water, to eliminate the terrible scourge and save the towering Elder Tree. Take control of Dewy using the Nintendo Wii Remote, rolling him around the environment and using special elemental powers with unique gesture-based controls to take on the dastardly forces of Don Hedron.

The sounds of Dewy are interesting. And that’s putting it plainly. As you go through the game, you’ll save your little friends that you’ll either pick up in the ground or in a pouch. It’s cute, because they’ll say ‘Thank You!’ or ‘Bless You!’. On the other hand, the enemies and Dewy himself are very chatty. It can be rather annoying, too. Luckily, no profanity or offensive noises were made. The music is also very entertaining. Songs can get stuck in the head, and I don’t know if that is good or bad. It’s really up for you to decide.

The graphics (as mentioned above) make up for what Elebits missed. The graphics have a nice clean feel. Bloom lighting was used in the game, and it gave a nice surreal touch to the game. Enemies and objects are nice and pretty. Dewy (and other water themed items such as Ice Dewy, Mist Dewy, and your friends and foes) have a glittery shiny water effect. It all looks so nice. No offensive images were shown. Sadly, all the pretty wears off, and we must go to my next point.

As far as playing the game goes, I’m confused. The graphics are pretty and cute like a children’s game, but the difficulty is absurd. It’s a difficult game. The controls work decent enough, but precision is key, which children (which I’m assuming was the target of the game) will most likely not have. Jumps, turns, and navigation can be frustrating, especially in tense moments. Speaking of tense moments, the bosses are even more of a challenge, and that’s a plus. I really wish Konami would have put a little more time and effort into the game controls. Gameplay is family friendly, and nothing offensive is played. The only thing to worry about is cartoon violence, but even then, you could compare it to a Mario game or Looney Toons.

If you’re up to a challenge, Dewy is the game for you. It’s a sweet and sour deal, but for $39.99 USD, I’d consider it a mostly sweet deal. If Konami decides for another new Wii game, let them learn their lessons from both Elebits and Dewy’s Adventure. Both games were so close, yet so far. Until then, my dear friends. Happy gaming!
