Boom Blox

Boom Blox is another reader requested review. If you read my online preview then you know Steven Spielberg and Electronic Arts (EA) teamed up to create this Wii game. The whole point of Boom Blox is to knock all the blocks down. This is done via baseballs, bowling balls, exploding bombs, coconuts, and other such things that can be thrown. These blocks need to be knocked over in the fewest throws possible. You knew there had to be a catch right?

The strange thing about Boom Blox is some of the block characters. There is death, skeletons, zombies, various animals, and more. This is the one part that families should take note of. There is also some violence as blocks can explode, and it sends stuff flying everywhere. I was not really clear why I was expected to destroy all these wonderfully artistic structures.

There are a lot of awesome family friendly games on the Wii, and many of them are very encouraging to the player. Boom Blox is the typical last century kind of a video game that  is not very encouraging. The music in Boom Blox is okay. It did not irritate me (like the game did), but I would not want to sit and listen to it all day either.

Boom Blox has over three hundred levels, and a level design mode. These user created levels can be shared thanks to WiiConnect24. Up to four players can destroy blocks together in Boom Blox. I spent a pretty penny picking up this Wii game, and feel like my money was wasted.

The controls use the Wii Remote to simulate throwing various objects at the screen. For some reason I kept having problems with the controls. This led to frustration, irritation, and then aggravation. Expect a challenge because Boom Blox gets difficult pretty quickly. At times levels made little to no sense to me, and luck had more to do with beating a level than skill.  On paper Boom Blox looked like it could have been a lot of fun, unfortunately that was not my experience with this Wii game.

Boom Blox allows the player to create, and design. That is a great thing. The whole point of creation is to destroy it though. That does not sit so well with me. Not all of us are interested in destruction, especially when the ESRB bestows an ‘E’ for Everyone rating. EA gets points for trying.
