Bomberman Land

Around the time the “Revolution” (which we know today as Wii) was revealed, Hudson showed a promising demo of Bomberman with three simple Minigames. Since then, we’ve waited for two years and finally, Bomberman Land Wii has emerged on American shores. You all know, me being the biggest Bomberman fan at Family Friendly Gaming, that I should have been excited to get my hands on this title. Amazingly...everything has a first. I was disappointed. What happened? Read on...

We’ve all seen the games where publishers think “Gameplay over Graphics”. Clearly, this shows in Hudson’s latest attempt. Graphics are blocky, textures are mucky, there are too many 2-D items that could be handled as actual 3-D objects on the Wii engine, and the presentation is lackluster. To make it worse, there is no Wide screen support. At best, this looks like an early Dreamcast game. Very, very, VERY primitive. Unless you count the bad graphics, no offensive images were shown.

The gameplay is something that is split. There are some very fun, exciting minigames to play. At the same time, there are some stinkers that just ruin the whole experience. Controls usually work, but on occasion, can be frustrating and quit on you. As you go through the theme park, you’ll earn Cards (they are labeled respectively in different zones). To get Cards, you must get tokens which are given at the beginning of the round. You may customize your Bomberman by giving him (or her, for the ladies) a name. You also can dress up and earn extra tokens for looking good. The Zones go by rounds. Once you are at the end of the Zone, you will either be Demoted, Held Back, or Promoted, depending on how well you do. The music is also very irritating. No offensive sounds were made, however.

As far as violence, it remains the same as all Bomberman games, both in story and multiplayer modes, so refer back to either Bomberman Land Touch! 1 or 2 (reviewed earlier) for the Nintendo DS. I had high hopes for this game. It could have been a great game and a fun family experience. It turned out to be a bomb...no pun intended. This one is for the fans only. Even then, you’d be better playing Bomberman Land Touch! 1 and 2 for the Nintendo DS. They’re much, much better.
