Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Beverly Hills Chihuahua is a riches to rags story. The pampered princess Chloe (editor: not technically a princess) gets kidnapped while in Mexico, and has to try and find her way back to Beverly Hills. Papi is devoted to her, and once he finds out she is missing - he gets on the trail. Chloe (who is voiced by Drew Barrymore) meets other canines along the way who either want to help or hurt her. There are even some surprises on this DVD like the animated short on the history of Chihuahua’s. There is an interesting contrast in this movie that was probably accidental. The amount of money spent on the pooches in Beverly Hills versus the starving dogs in Mexico.

I was a little surprised at the images in the beginning of Beverly Hills Chihuahua. There is extravagant outfits on dogs, and women in bikinis. Chloe’s owner loves her dog, and that is shown to a rather unhealthy extreme. Later in the movie there is peril as certain bad characters are threatening, or getting their just rewards. I did not see any blood or gore, so thats good.  Papi’s devotion to Chloe (even after her multiple rejections) is nice to see.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua has some music that fits the PG rating. I found certain lyrics, and lines to be racy. Probably not considered as such in present day culture, but the Family Friendly Gaming standards do not blow in the wind. Animals are shown to be more important than people on this DVD and that made my mouth drop open. Chloe finds her inner bark in a self power kind of a lesson.

Disney included some fascinating extras in Beverly Hills Chihuahua. The Blooper Scooper was a little short for my tastes, but the animated short was pretty neat. Commentary and deleted scenes round out the bonus materials. If you are really into canine films, then Beverly Hills Chihuahua is worth your hard earned dollars.

Disney continues their intelligent designs of the menu screens. Beverly Hills Chihuahua functions really well. I hit a few places where the DVD did not do what I was expecting, however those were rare occurrences. I had seen this movie previewed as humorous, but did not find myself laughing once.

I was disappointed to see the aunt being lied to about the status of her dog. This deceit is never caught, and thus the lesson is you can get away with it. The whole empowerment issue is touched upon as well. There is also a love story going on in Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and devotion is rewarded. I’m still not afraid of a Chihuahua though.
