Backyard Football 10

I did not know what to expect from Backyard Football 10 on the Wii. I thought it might be an arcade style football game with some small sized players. I was wrong. I am not afraid to admit when I am wrong. Backyard Football 10 has small sized players, however there is a depth to the play calling I was not expecting. Think of this game as a mix between Family Fun Football, and the Madden franchise. The players look cute, and have special powers they can use a few times in the game. There are a lot of plays, and formations that can be called. I also found that the computer will burn you if you make a mistake.

One of the most interesting things visually about Backyard Football 10 is the fields. There are some interesting fantasy based fields like in a castle. The one with the baseball field on it reminded me of stadiums back in the day (when more football and baseball teams shared the same field). The tackling is rather tame in this game. The defense hits the offense and bam they fall down. NFL teams, and some I have never heard of before are included in this game.

The color commentator in Backyard Football 10 has a lot of off the wall comments. I found myself laughing quite a bit. He has a ton of humorous one liners that add a layer to Backyard Football 10. The intro to this game also has a fun little music video that I enjoyed. I did not hear any offensive language while playing Backyard Football 10 on the Wii.

Four family members can play Backyard Football 10 at the same time. There are regular games, tournaments, seasons, jump straight in, and more. I liked the create a player option, even if it is a little limited. Backyard Football 10 contains various unlockable rewards for those the dig deeply into this game.

I would advise all of our readers to find the control instructions in the game or the manual before playing a lot. There are quite a few different features like stiff arming that you could miss. This will handicap you in the game, so I would learn a bit before playing too much. I had fun playing Backyard Football 10, as did those who beat me.

I really enjoy video games that are safe for the entire family. Backyard Football 10 is one of those games. My kids really got into this game, and I liked all the various play choices. The practice mode is a nice feature by the way. I hope Atari keeps producing these games, and a future release will include a tutorial mode.
