Alvin and the Chipmunks The Chipettes

I remember Alvin and the Chipmunks (the cartoon) from when I was a little girl. It is nice to be able to review a product like Alvin and the Chipmunks The Chipettes because it brings back so many wonderful memories. On top of that this is something I can share with my children, and know it is safe for them to watch (editor: much safer than a lot of the current crop of cartoons). The Chipettes are essentially female versions of the Chipmunks with many of the same personality characteristics. This lets the Chipmunks face some of their quirks, and learn about themselves. This is a nice little port of cartoons from our childhood, and a nice addition to the animation market.  I was very pleased to see the good morals make the translation to DVD.

Alvin and the Chipmunks The Chipettes looks just like I remember it. There are a lot of bright colors, and the characters animate nicely. In fact some of the positions they can go into we could not, but remember this is a cartoon. The girls dress like we did in the 80s, and it makes me miss a lot of attire choices we once had.

There is different rock and roll (editor: from the 80s) songs that can be heard in Alvin and the Chipmunks The Chipettes. The innocent Chipmunk and/or Chipette voices make for interesting renditions of songs like Material Girl, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and It's my Party and I'll cry if want to. In a lot of ways the versions of these songs on this DVD are a lot safer than say the music videos were. I am not so sure about the message of Material Girl.

The only real problem I have with Alvin and the Chipmunks The Chipettes is the replay and extras section. There are six eleven minute cartoons and some extras included. For the price this is coming out I would expect more episodes like an entire season of the cartoon.

Alvin and the Chipmunks The Chipettes functions as it should, and there is a definite intelligent design to the layouts of the menus. A true test of any menu on a DVD is if my six year old son can navigate them, and he can. Both of my children got up and danced with the Chipmunks and had a great time with this DVD.

I am happy that Paramount took the time to put Alvin and the Chipmunks The Chipettes on DVD. There are a lot of great cartoons from past eras that have not gotten to retail shelves. Generally the older they are the safer they are (not always a rule though). Alvin and the Chipmunks The Chipettes bridged the cartoon gap in our household, and it was awesome to see my kids enjoy this as much as I did when I was their age.
