Wipeout Pure

There is very little pure about Wipeout Pure from Sony. The WMG has always been one to stand up for truth in the face of those who would distort the truth. Players get to race in a violent racing game with weapons on these hovercraft type vehicles. Yes, this game is set in the future where getting to race and blow up the competition is somehow acceptable. Maybe after one hundred years of playing ultra violent video games the population will see murdering other people as ‘acceptable.’ The WMG however does not accept such a premise, and puts that big ole size twelve foot down.

The visuals on this Playstation Portable game are decent. There are some bright and colorful levels, also some dank and dark levels. The violent explosions are generally very bright with all kinds of fire special effects, and then the burnt out vehicle eventually comes to a stop. Wipeout Pure does not give the feel of speed, so as a racing game it fails miserably.

The audio department of Wipeout Pure falls under the techno umbrella. If you are into that kind of loud, fast, and vibrating music then you will probably like the musical selection. The WMG does not fall into that category and found the music to be annoying, and faster paced than the action in the game. It is easy to turn off the sounds on the PSP though.

There are a decent amount of tracks, and if you can handle the gameplay problems then there is some replay to be found. For the WMG the replay is hampered by the mindless violence involved in weapons being utilized. Not worth the money though.

These hovercrafts control like bricks. Added to the frustration is the attempt to avoid the computer shooting you (whenever they wind up behind you). The tracks are boring to race on, and these bricks are difficult to control around almost every turn. More testing needed to be done from the QA department on how poorly this game controls.

What ever happened to good sportsmanship in racing games. Get to the finish line first, and blow up everyone else is not the WMG’s idea of a good game, or one worth a minute of your time.
