Wii Play

Nintendo and Family Friendly Gaming have quite a bit in common. Both of them march to the beat of their own drum, and both care about families. Wii Play on the Nintendo Wii is an interesting compilation of some current, and retro games that have all been updated to use the Wii Remote in what has now become common place in the video game industry. The games within Wii Play are: Shooting Range, Billiards, Find Mii, Table Tennis, Pose Mii, Laser Hockey, Fishing, Charge, and Tanks. As if that were not enough Nintendo also included a Wii Remote. All of these games can be played by one or two players.

All video game compilations range graphically, and Wii Play is no exception. Some of the graphics (especially the backgrounds) are very nicely done. The fishing game has a Yoshi Island feel to it that is rather disappointing to me personally. I suppose Nintendo meant for a youthful experience. Most of the graphics in Wii Play are very bright and colorful. There is some cartoon violence in this game with the Tanks video game. The Shooting Range has a variety of things that can be shot (targets, cans, ducks, UFOs’, etc.).

The sounds in Wii Play are extremely crisp and clear. All of the sounds work well in each of the games, especially the Laser Hockey and Shooting Range. The music is appropriate and cheerful. I did not find any offensive sounds in this game at all. Nintendo continues to show that a game can be clean, and be fun at the exact same time.

These little games are simple, but engaging at the same time. Each of them can be played for a few minutes or at great length. It just depends on the individual(s) playing. Wii Play works as a single player, or two players. In my humble opinion it is better as a two player game. The inclusion of a Wii Remote is the key factor that makes me say this game is worth your hard earned dollars. Bear in mind you are getting nine simple little games. If these games bore you quickly, then you will not want to purchase this game. It does work wonders when two people get together to hang out.

I have grown accustom to the way the Wii Remote controls, and Wii Play has many of the normal control schemes that usually control well. The one problem I ran into was the Pose Mii, and trying to completely rotate the Mii. The design of the Shooting Range, and Tanks show some real intelligence. I had a lot of fun playing this game, as did everyone I played it with.

The cartoonish and 2D looking fish are not harmed as they are caught. The majority of the shooting range is inanimate objects. It is a good tool for hunters to work on their aim. It would be nice if games like this were downloadable instead of put together in a compilation. Find Mii teaches pattern recognition. Tanks is the only game in this compilation that may bother some. These little tanks shoot each other until one of them explodes. It is nice that so many of these games are safe for the family, and promote family time. Better than a lot on the market.
