Wall-E

Wall-E has to be one of the most exciting video game releases of 2008. The video games take the characters from what will be another Disney Pixar blockbuster of the same name. The Nintendo DS version of Wall-E is a puzzle game. Wall-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) finds a plant, bug, and other robots that move him away from his career in garbage into a space faring journey. Since I have not seen the movie I am not sure if there is a chicken little fear of pollution on the planet. It does remind me of stories I read from the 1970s where many in the media were scared the planet was becoming over run with pollution. Almost forty years later we still have millions of acres of green land that has been untouched by humans. This concept was not found in the Nintendo DS version of Wall-E.

THQ tried to do a lot of things graphically with Wall-E. The 3D graphics are decent in most areas of the game. The limitations of the Nintendo DS are apparent. The game starts in the trash heap and is pretty bland. Once the player gets to the space ship levels it really brightens up. Wall-E can throw cubes that explode (push), disable, or pull enemies off edges. That it the depth of the violence in this DS game.

I genuinely enjoyed the music in Wall-E for the Nintendo DS. The music is uplifting, pleasant, and brought a smile to my face. The robotic special effect sounds work nicely in this game as well. I did not find any offensive sounds while playing Wall-E.

The player is rewarded with a picture for every level they get all the special BnL coins from. This can lead to quite a bit of replay trying to find them all, and figure out how to get to them. If you like puzzle games that require a little action from the player, then Wall-E will be worth your investment.

I absolutely adore how THQ put hints in places to assist me through certain puzzles. This really helps the player avoid getting stuck. Well, usually that helps avoid getting stuck. I did find with looking around (editor: rotating the camera) I would almost always find the switch. Throwing cubes of trash is mainly used to turn switches on. I had a lot of fun playing Wall-E.

From what I hear the other versions of Wall-E have a more action theme, and some include a laser that Wall-E shoots things with. The Nintendo DS version does not contain that, and I am thankful for the puzzle solving aspects. I would like to see a sequel to this kind of game, and even this franchise. I am pretty excited to see the Wall-E movie now. See you there, and in millions of acres of parks.
