Tropix

Tropix is an interesting monkey themed mini game compilation. There are eleven games included. Most of them are familiar like bowling, or Sudoku. Playing these games earns sand dollars which can be spend on items for the island, or saved up to purchase another island.  The monkey swinging game is one of the more interesting mini games I have come across in awhile. Using the stylus the player swings the monkey from vine to vine. The word spelling puzzle game is pretty cool too.

Visually speaking this is one of the safest E10+ ESRB rated video games I have ever seen. The comic mischief is really light, and the 'drinks' are so small graphically that it could be any kind of consumable liquid. Some of the mini games do not look that great, but others look great. I do wish the graphics were a little bit bigger.

Tropix has decent music that fits the theme of the different islands. I really like the simple instructions on how to play the mini games that is provided on this DS cartridge. I would have liked some additional special effect sounds in some of the mini games, but that may be just me. There is some gambling allowed in Tropix as well.

Real Arcade made each of the mini games progressively more difficult in Tropix. The different islands, and unlockable content can have gamers playing this game for months. I liked purchasing items, put them on the island, and then watching my little characters interact with them. The only complaint I have is I wish the island was a little bigger, like more than one screen.  Tropix includes multi-player modes with one game cartridge.

Tropix controls like it should in every aspect. Some of the mini games offer assistance when the player gets stuck. A few like solitaire should tell the player when there is no more moves since I spent some time trying to figure out if I was stuck of not in that game. I ran into a couple of rare problems with the monkey swinging mini games, but it was the exception not the rule. I had fun with quite a few of the mini games in Tropix.

The fascinating aspect of Tropix is the game is geared towards children, but with an E10+ rating it may miss the target audience. Those ten and older may not be as interested in a mini game compilation. Which is truly a shame because there is a lot of good to be found in Tropix for the Nintendo DS. I would like to see sequels to this game, maybe on the Wii.
