The Incredible Hulk
SCORE: 72
The Incredible Hulk is
another attempt at doing The Incredible Hulk. This film is much darker,
grittier, and shocking than the previous film, and a hundred times more
violent than the television show with Lou Ferrigno. In fact the level of
violence is the most shocking thing about this DVD. The storyline
follows the tried and true Marvel comics type story. Bruce Banner is
hunted by the army, and he is trying to find a cure. As the movie
progresses The Incredible Hulk seems to start to age mentally. At the
end of the movie he can say a few meager words, and Bruce wants to try
and control him.
I was shocked at some of the images like a man being kicked who knows
how far into a tree. This is one of the most disgusting images I have
ever seen in any movie or television show. The Abomination is also
hideous to look at, and the viewers are led to believe The Leader is
being created in this movie as well. Can anyone say sequel? The
storylines are not as tight in this one as they are in the Spider-Man
movies, but they leave a few clues for comic book fans. The Incredible
Hulk has plenty of things to destroy, and gleefully does so. Okay, maybe
not gleefully since he is angry most of the time.
There is some language that is not appropriate in The Incredible Hulk,
and it really has no place. There is some major disrespect to parents as
Betty is very hateful to her father. Her father's crime? He is trying to
stop the rampaging monster from murdering, and destroying. There are
some good audio moments as learning to control ones anger is initially
embraced. Unfortunately the power of The Incredible Hulk is too
seductive, and Bruce decides to dance with the devil instead of leave
Pandora's box alone.
There are a decent amount of extras included on this DVD, and even a
paper inside that gives access to Hulk comics online. Non-comic book
fans will find little interest in most of the extras so please keep that
in mind. If you need to be de-sensitized to violence then The Incredible
Hulk is a wonderful tool. Behind the scenes information has always been
of interest to me. The movie has an interesting ending with a lot of
good information about a possible Avengers movie. I re-watched that
short scene multiple times to get all of the clues.
The Incredible Hulk functions well. A few of the menu screens lost me
since there was so much going on. Overall though the menu screens
display an intelligent design. With all of the major flaws, and problems
with this DVD I found myself interested in the characters, and wanted
them to make better choices. I was a little dismayed at how quickly
Betty threw away her boyfriend to chase after Bruce.
The Incredible Hulk had an interesting almost love scene where Bruce
told Betty no because his heart rate could not get too high. They made
the right decision, but of course Hollywood gives the wrong reason.
There are plenty of studies that show sex outside of marriage is one of
the worst mistakes people make. Hollywood should try to be more
responsible. The Incredible Hulk tries to portray Bruce as a sympathetic
character, but it is difficult to accept that with the wanton damage he
causes.
