Speed Racer

I was so hoping to turn on this game and hear: “Go Speed Go.” After I got over my initial disappointment I realized that this was one of the most interesting racing games to come along since F-Zero. The loops, speed, and sheer scope of the races are very impressive. Warner Bros Interactive let their imaginations run wild with some of the race tracks in this Wii game. There are plenty of characters from the movie to interest those millions that dig Speed Racer.

The best way to describe the graphics in Speed Racer is one word - trip. They are a total and complete trip to behold. A little bit of advice - keep your eyes on the track when driving upside down at unbelievable speeds. There are some amazing vibrant colors in Speed Racer. A few of the female characters are wearing attire that may raise some eyebrows. They are mainly seen on the character select screen. There is some violence as cars can knock each other around. The player can choose to avoid doing this and race clean if they want to take the moral high ground.

Speed Racer has some nice music that compliments the intense racing action. The different characters say things as they pass, get passed, or try to pass. A few of these comments have language that I want my children to avoid. The sound bytes are actually at a low volume, but worth a mention.

I love it when games include a lot of unlockable content. Speed Racer has a lot of content including other racers that can be unlocked. The race tracks are fun, and there is enough variety to keep most gamers interested for awhile.

Speed Racer controls amazingly well. The only control issue I ever ran into was starting out each race. The cars will waggle a little bit there, but after that the controls are great. I could get my vehicle facing the right direction after getting knocked sideways. The turbo options are amazing and add additional speed to an already quick racing game. I had fun playing Speed Racer on the Nintendo Wii.

Speed Racer has a couple of minor issues with the language, and violence. Even with those issues I enjoyed playing it, and would like to see sequels to it. The Wii needs a futuristic racer, and Warner Bros Interactive has provided. It was my pleasure to play, and review Speed Racer the Wii. Comes with a free movie ticket.
