Saving God

When I saw the first trailers to Saving God, I had a suspicion that this could be one of the best DVD releases in the year of our Lord 2008. My gut feeling was vindicated once I saw Cloud Ten Pictures latest DVD release - Saving God. This is a gritty, intense, compassionate, and deep film. The acting is top notch by some very well known names. Ving Rhames, Dean McDermott, Richard Chavira and more are found inside this hard hitting PG-13 film. I know what many of you are thinking - here is another Christian film getting an older rating when films that preach eastern religions are treated with kiddy gloves. I can attest that there is drug related material, and violence. Thankfully not as intense as what Hollywood produces. Cloud Ten Pictures proves intense content can be dealt with in a respectful manner that does not wind up glorifying it. Saving God has some interesting little plot twists that I did not see coming. The angst that many of the characters go through exhibit how deep this film is.

Saving God is about a murderer who gets out, goes back to the hood. He wants to improve the situation there, and runs across a young pusher (editor: for a drug dealer). He has become a pastor, and takes over his fathers run down church in the middle of the ghetto. I was expecting Saving God to be a lot darker than it was. The inner city in winter looks cold. The facial expressions of the actors, as well as their body movements are exceptional. As I mentioned before there is violence, but it is never gory. There is also mercy shown in this movie multiple times.

This DVD really surprised me on so many different levels. The plot twists at the end are too good to be spoiled in this review. The emotions found in Saving God range extremely well. Ving Rhames is one of my favorite actors, and he does an amazing job in Saving God. His character has a chip on his shoulder, and mega churches are one of the targets. In the end though he is able to admit when/where he is wrong, and asks to be prayed for.

Saving God is one of those DVD’s that can be watched over and over again. There is so much good content in it, and the lessons are so very important that the Christian community needs to take notice. The extra content found on this DVD help with that purchase making decision. Speaking of which I find Saving God worth your hard earned money.

Everything in Saving God functions perfectly. I ran into no issues while watching this DVD. I found this to be enjoyable film that got me thinking, and I had an emotional response. Saving God produced tears in two different parts of the film, and I think you will as well.

I may receive some flak for this decision - I found Saving God to be family friendly. The violence was a part of the story and shown to be the wrong path to take. Saving God does not glorify violence, instead it shows how wrong it is. Helping people even when they are considered unreachable is one of the lessons in this DVD that I appreciate.
