Robots

The WMG found Robots to be a cute little movie that had only a thing or two that could be considered offensive (flatulent, and big booty jokes). When the WMG found out that a Nintendo DS video game had been released based on the movie, well the WMG had to get a copy from Sierra. For those not familiar with the Robots movie, it follows the exploits of a young inventor robot who wants to be like the main man from the largest corporation in that fantasy world. Problem is the image of the corporation, and the reality of the situation is far different. The main man inventor is just not in charge anymore, and the Robot in control wants to get rid of dirty, old rusty robots; and only keep around the robots who can afford to upgrade to the latest, and greatest.

Sierra did a pseudo 3D for Robots on the Nintendo DS. Think about the old Golden Axe on the Sega Genesis (editor: or recent compilation discs) to get an idea how the game looks. There are some really sweet transportation levels inside rolling balls that are a real treat to play. Many of the graphics are pretty bland, and not very colorful. The details of the different characters is a’right, especially on the pop up face shots. The artwork follows the universe from the movie. The player swings a wrench at the bad guys, and sprockets come flying off. Vanquished foes vanish rather quickly.

The WMG had such high hopes for Robots, and the sounds were also lacking. There are a few sounds from the movie, and some music that was close to what is in the movie. It really feels like Robots is lacking in that department though. All of the whacking, and hitting enemies was more annoying than anything else. The sounds in Robots does not work really well in the WMG’s oh ever so humble opinion. The WMG knows the Nintendo DS can do way more in the musical department than what Sierra put into this game.

Sierra included no reasons to replay Robots. In fact there are very few reasons to play Robots in the first place. Yup, yup, yup the little transportation game that is played between areas is enjoyable, but the rest of the game is super duper boring. Talk to a robot, whack a few different robot enemies with yous wrench, get an item here or there, take it back, fight a boss on a rare occasion as well. This is a one player game, and in the WMG’s opinion it is not worth your hard earned dollars. Yes the WMG knows it can be found pretty cheap, but this movie to video game adaptation was not done well. Sierra went off of name recognition only.

Robots handles really well, but the perspective can lead to some problems in jumping in certain areas. The players robot controls in a very responsive, and quick manner. The designs of the levels makes little sense to the WMG. It pains me to say Robots was no fun to play, but the WMG has to speak the truth in love.

The storyline from the movie about standing up against evil, standing up against greed, and putting an equal value on everyone are lightly present in this Nintendo DS rendition of Robots. The cartoon violence in this game means it is not safe for the entire family. It was a sad moment for the WMG to realize this game was nowhere near the standards of the movie. If there is ever to be a sequel to this game a new developer needs to pick it up, or some major house cleaning over at Sierra.
