Motor Storm

The review of Motor Storm in the last issue of Family Friendly Gaming created a huge firestorm of controversy. A certain entity (editor: that will remain nameless) was very upset with the review. The editors at Family Friendly Gaming believe we are all human, and prone to make mistakes. So the WMG was part of a panel that reviewed the review. It was decided that a Second Look would be taken at Motor Storm. Sony got some things right in this game, and quite a few things wrong.

Motor Storm has some excellent graphics, and the splash of the mud on the screen blocking the view is a nice little special effect. This game really seems to be geared towards those who are enslaved to the MTV culture. Slowing down the motion to watch crashes directly conflicts with those who are not interested in witnessing painful accidents. The party scene shown in the videos of the game also is done in a way to appeal to those who think that kind of behavior is something to be proud of. The WMG was not able to duplicate the bug mentioned in the earlier review.

The music in Motor Storm on the Playstation 3 is also geared towards those who eat up the MTV brand of music. The WMG looked up the lyrics on quite a few of the songs included in this game, and was deeply offended by the lyrics. The WMG also wonders how many people listening to this brand of music actually take the time to investigate the philosophies they are being fed. Being respectful of ones elders, women, and having a positive attitude is very important and the lyrics directly attack that.

For some odd reasons there are not a lot of different race tracks in Motor Storm. The player is forced to play different vehicles on the same track, as if that adds some replay value to it. There are different vehicles to race, but they really match more of the players style than adding any variance to replay. Not a lot innovative or new in this game, and a rather mediocre racer.

The controls handle quite well, and as long as you pick the proper path for that vehicle it all works good. Crashing, going the wrong path, or getting too close to other racers is when problems crop up. The whole off road racing adventure is over hyped, but a solid racing game. The WMG assumes the PS3 controller is using that six axis thingee, but really has no clue if it affects the controls.

Motor Storm on the Playstation 3 is a rather niche title on a machine that is in last place of the current generation of console wars. The WMG agrees with Paul that the slow motion crashes do get very old, very quickly. The whole destroy everything that is in your way teaching is something we abhor in business, politics, etc. so why peddle it to teenagers? Around average at best.
