Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Once I stepped into St. Mystere with Professor Layton, I noticed something very irregular about the small, curious village. As I stepped in, the first thing I had to sign was...a puzzle? The inhabitants of St. Mystere sure are fond of puzzles. Oh, yes. I forgot to tell you why we are here. The great Baron has passed, leaving a family fortune behind. The problem is...the family doesn’t know exactly what it is or where to find it. That it is the Golden Apple...I’ll explain about it a little more.

The scenery of Professor Layton, simply put, are fantastic. Hand drawn sprites and environments bring the game to a true life. Character design and animation are also very well done.

Animated cut scenes are wonderfully done, as it has movie-quality animation. Everything is clearly represented. In mini games, the graphics are a little more simplistic, but it fits the mood of the game. St. Mystere is a fabulous place, and could be a vacation spot. No offensive images were shown.

The music in this game simply has me hooked. I love the charming, mellow music. While mellow, it also has a tone of mystery and uncertainty. Mini games also share the same song, but are not distracting so the player can solve puzzles and riddles without any distractions. During the animated cut scenes, there is full voice acting. It’s absolutely marvelous. During the game, some voice clips are played, but they do not get annoying. No offensive sounds were made.

The gameplay is awesome. It consists of an adventure field where you explore by point-and-click methods, and mini games where you solve puzzles and riddles. Some puzzles are for fun, while others are required to progress in the story. The controls are easy and are usually explained. No offensive gameplay is available.

The story is funny and quirky, but eventually leads to a murder. No worries, though. Not everything is as it seems! It’s not quite a murder...but more of a misunderstanding. Aside from that, it’s a fun and fairly family friendly game. I recommend this to any puzzle lover or a gamer looking for a deep story. Using the Nintendo Wifi Connection, players can download a new puzzle every week! All in all, the game is worth the $35 you pay, and you get more for you money if you have Internet access. This is a true classic, and I’d hate for you to miss it! I certainly hope Nintendo has a sequel planned for the DS or even a Wii game of Professor Layton. This is a game that has wide possibilities, so I hope Nintendo explores it.
