Pogo Island
SCORE: 79
Pogo Island on the Nintendo DS is Electronic Arts attempt at a kid friendly video game. They get some things right, some things wrong. Explore this vast review with your guide - the WMG. Pogo Island is part board game (emulated on a video game), and part mini game. There are five different mini games found within this Nintendo DS cartridge: Poppit, Word Whomp, Tripeaks, Philinx, and Squelches. These mini games range from fun to partially educational. All of these mini games are of the puzzle genre.
The graphics in Pogo Island have a nice dash of color found throughout. Some of the details are lacking slightly in the WMG’s opinion though (editor: trying to read some of the in game text for example). The characters animate at about average, and some of the background graphics are nice to see. The WMG did not find any offensive images while playing Pogo Island.
The sounds found within Pogo Island are themed quite nicely. The tropical island feel is felt within the sounds in a way that is pleasant. The special effects of one of the mini games gets annoying in the WMG’s opinion. None of the sounds reach the offensive level thankfully.
Electronic Arts did something very fascinating in order to encourage families to replay this game. The game collects tokens and then the player uses the WiFi of the Nintendo DS to collect prizes from a website. These prizes are downloaded to the game and available for the player. If you like the five mini games then this game could be worth your very hard earned dollars. In the WMG’s opinion there are not enough mini games, and they are not interesting enough to keep replaying.
The one area of Pogo Island that Electronic Arts really failed at is the gameplay. This is supposed to be a game geared more towards kids. As an adult I had trouble with some of the mini games. How in the world is a kid supposed to play this game. Losing the same mini game over and over again was not fun. Not being able to progress on the board around the island made that even more miserable. On the plus side the controls handle quite well.
The WMG likes to see games
like Pogo Island. It is a good first try from Electronic Arts. It may be
worth a rental if you can find anyone that rents out Nintendo DS video
games. The worst part of the content is a pirate character who is not
offensive. Some sequels to Pogo Island would be most welcome here at
Family Friendly Gaming.
