Odin Sphere

Odin Sphere is one of the strangest little side scrolling hack and slash titles that the WMG has played in a long time. Players get to take on the role of the daughter of the Demon Lord Odin. Odin has started a war of aggression against his neighbors in order to rule over the entire continent. So not only is the player on the wrong side, but completely faithful to serving on the side of darkness. Levels consist of circular areas that loop upon themselves. The main character also uses a weapon that has an occultic crystal on the end that uses the souls of those it murders in order to grow more powerful. Magical attacks are also allowed in this game, and learned as the player levels up.

The graphical style in Odin Sphere is different. The animations do not work that well, but seem to be designed that way. There is a lot of violence, but murdered enemies vanish. The attire of some of the female characters is highly shameful. Wise men would avoid such folly. Many of the colors are very bright and colorful contrasting against dark and drab.

The audio section of Odin Sphere is a half and half. The music is very pleasant and nice. The voice acting is decent, but does not seem to impart emotion. There is also some language that many will find objectionable. There are also concepts this game teaches that are in direct conflict with the Word of God (i.e. no afterlife). There is also some disgusting sexual innuendo in this game.

There is little to no reason to replay Odin Sphere. In fact much of the offensive content will keep most believers away from this game.

The controls work quite well in Odin Sphere. In fact the controls are the area of the game that the WMG can say the best things about. The layout of these controls are done nicely. The up and down, circular set up of the levels is a little strange, and monotonous.

Parents should understand that there are a lot of adult issues handled in this game like having an affair, and a child out of wedlock. There is also the theme of trying to win a father’s love, and serving the side of evil. The WMG wishes the game would have really hammered how bad it is to serve evil. The long list of problems the ESRB found in this ‘T’ for Teen rated title should give you a starting point of what kind of material this game will include. No sequels unless there is a lot of clean up.
