Monster Trucks DS

One of the things that many people love to do is to go to monster truck rally’s. Not to be confused with the fast food Rally’s drive through establishment. Majesco Entertainment put some thought and effort into Monster Trucks DS. The title of this video game should give it away, but if you did not notice this is a Nintendo DS video game. The features of the DS are not utilized a whole lot, except for menu screens. The racing action is most fascinating indeed.

To me there is something wrong with trying to do something really big, on something really little. Meaning trying to capture Monster Trucks on the Nintendo DS. It is like trying to see the Grand Canyon on a 5 inch television set. Fundamentally there is going to be problems. Monster Trucks DS animates nicely, and tries to do 3D racing action. The 3D graphics are at about the level of most DS games, and that means disappointing. The menu screens are nicely done, and many of the backgrounds are done quite well. The level of violence is trucks running over one another with no damage done.

The sounds are around average in Monster Trucks DS for me. The revving of the monster trucks is nice, but grows old after awhile. The music is pleasant, but nothing too memorable for me. I did not hear any offensive sounds while playing this game.

If you can handle the issues presented in the next section, then there can be a decent amount of replay to be found within Monster Trucks DS. I did not find an offensive material that would stop me from playing.

I had some real high hopes for Monster Trucks DS, and sadly the controls really drag this game down. I would get stuck on a little tree that barely reached the bumper of the truck. Turning is like rolling dice - the game is amazingly ultra sensitive at times, and makes you crank down hard at others. Monster Trucks DS can be played if you can adjust to the control problems, but a lot of swerving back and forth will happen before the player reaches that point. The race tracks are not very inspired either.

As far as the Family Friendly Factor goes Monster Trucks DS is a nice little game for families. If the controls would have been better this game might be one to look into. Racing around monster trucks with no destruction is a worthwhile endeavor. I would love some sequels, especially if the control issues are addressed, and improved - drastically.
