Monster Bomber
SCORE: 77
The WMG enjoys finding things in video games that few (editor: if any) other video game media outlets find. Monster Bomber on the Nintendo DS has eastern religious images in the background of some levels. Other gaming mags, and websites will claim a separation of gaming and religion, but the only religion they separate is Christianity. Players select a color from the bottom screen, and then tap to launch a bolt of that color up towards the ugly looking little creatures slowing floating down towards the player. The game talks about saving the world, but there is little talk as to why the monsters are attacking.
The graphics in Monster Bomber on the Nintendo DS are generally bright and colorful in the ugly monsters, and color choices. The background graphics are pretty dark, and dreary however. There is some cartoon violence as the player is essentially shooting all of these ugly monsters. In some ways this game reminds the WMG of the Space Invaders franchise. It is not related, but of the same style. The main difference is Monster Bomber has no organization in the monsters that come from the top to the bottom.
The audio department of Monster Bomber is slightly above average. The music fits the game, but the special effects sounds only irritated the WMG. Not to the point of a migraine. Most of the sounds are crisp and clear as well. There are thankfully no offensive sounds that the WMG heard while playing this Nintendo DS video game.
If this kind of a puzzle game is up your alley then a decent amount of replay can be found. There are only twenty stages, although endless play is available. To be honest the WMG finds this bargain basement priced Nintendo DS game to be slightly repetitive. The different colors aspect is an interesting mechanic that really adds more confusion.
The biggest issue the WMG has with Monster Bomber is the controls. It is all guess work trying to figure out where the player is going to hurl a bomb up at the ugly monsters. This can lead to a lot of misses, which can multiply the monsters (editor: since hitting a monster with the wrong color creates another monster). There are some blocks that get in the way of the player shooting, but do not stop the monsters at all.
Monster Bomber feels like
a generic puzzle game thrown together with an occasional new idea that
does not apply them very well. The whole bombing the monsters, and no
reason to even be battling them in the first deter from this game. The
eastern religious images can easily be considered low level
indoctrination.
