Megaman Battle Network 5

The first Megaman Battle Network (MMBN) series to make it to the Nintendo DS was actually a port from the Gameboy Advance. It is strange that number six (editor: which ended the series and connected it to the rest of the Megaman universe) was on the GBA only. The touch screen of the Nintendo DS lends itself quite well to this franchise. Capcom also made sure to do more than just do a straight port as a lot of the controls were overhauled in a way that improves how this game is played. The game box says two games in one, but it is the same game with a few different bosses and chips (ala Pokemon). Lan and Hub (aka Megaman) are back for more virus busting and to save the world.

MMBN5 certainly shows it Gameboy Advance roots in a lot of places. The 3D graphics of Megaman standing there on the bottom screen are nice. The layout of the menus lends itself perfectly to the Nintendo DS. There is violence in this game as the player shoots, throws bombs at, etc. the different viruses during the battle screens. Capcom also turned up the heat by having a lot more battle screens. There are also images of eastern religious symbols being used as things that assist the player.

The sounds in MMBN5 are really nice. They are very upbeat, and go along with the game quite well. The talking parts included on the DS really add a dimension to this game.

Capcom has released so many of these games in such a quick succession that few players will have an interest in collecting all the chips. The storyline is also too much like previous games that in a lot of ways it is a throw away title. There are also less areas included in this game. Save your money for a better game that will not embarrass/offend.

The gameplay really hurts MMBN5. The layout of the levels does not work well, especially on a DS lite. Capcom really needs to go away from the angles and return to right being right, and left being left.

There are some moral and ethical issues with MMBN5. Lan lies to his mother in order to do what he feels is right. The souls of the different Navis commune with one another to create a more powerful being. Lan and Megaman are quick to use violence, and revenge in order to get the way they feel is right. It is a shame that Capcom went away from good lessons in the first three MMBN games, in order to draw the series down. No occult though.
