M and Ms Break em

Very few media outlets will even cover a video game based on a candy. Family Friendly Gaming does not shut our minds off to a game based on M & M’s candy. Plus playing this game will not give your teeth cavities, unless the game gives a craving to buy the candy. M & M’s Break ‘em is a puzzle game where the player controls a ‘M’ with the bottom screen. Hitting a block so many times, and being the same color will make it go away. Color changes can be performed by hitting certain blocks at the bottom of the upper screen. DSI Games gives the player so much time to get rid of all the blocks, and find the exit door in each level.

Graphically M & M’s Break ‘em is okay. There are some very nice bright and colorful schemes throughout the game. The details are lacking for a Nintendo DS game, and I have to wonder if this was a quick port (or translation) from the Gameboy Advance (GBA) game. Breaking blocks, or an ‘M’ breaking is the extent of the violence in this game. Which in my book is nice to have, and safe for the different members of the family. Some of the graphics do seem a little bland to me.

I really feel like M & M’s Break ‘em on the Nintendo DS is lacking in the sounds department. The music is pleasant enough, but there are just not enough noises going on while playing the game for my tastes. I also wish there was a little more pop when a block was being hit or destroyed. In fact I was not always sure if I had hit a block because of the sounds. I did not hear any offensive sounds while playing this game.

Any puzzle game half way worth their salt can have an amazing amount of replay value. In fact the biggest problem with most puzzle games is they can be too addictive. Thankfully M & M’s Break ‘em is not too addictive. There are different ‘M’ characters to play each with their own stats, a decent amount of different levels, and modes to keep most gamers busy for a few weeks. Since this game is bargain priced it could be worth your hard earned dollars.

The one knock I have on M & M’s Break ‘em is the controls. Directing the ‘M’ character with the bottom touch screen, and watching the action on the upper screen can be problematic at times. There certainly is an intelligent design in the layout of the levels. Many of these stages really needed more time allocated.

Not all of the M & M’s commercials have been family friendly, so it is nice to see the game stick with good traditional values. Concentration, along with hand eye coordination are the lessons in this game. M & M’s Break ‘em is safe for the entire family.
