Legend of the Dragon

I have never been a fan of fighting gamer personally. Turning the other cheek results in the game getting mad at me. Legend of the Dragon on the Nintendo Wii is based on the cartoon that is heavily into eastern mysticism. Characters have a spiritual sort of bar that builds and then they can transform into a half human, half beast. Certain characters also have questionable names like Jaguar god. One button is used for punching, and the other kicking (‘A’, and ‘B’ respectively). The Wii Remote and Nunchuck are both needed for this game.

The cel shaded graphics are interesting to see in a 3D fighting game. They feel weird at first, but after a few hours they made sense. There are generally bright colors, and lot of special visual effects to the spiritual attacks. The zoom in, and zoom out features function properly. Legend of the Dragon earns its ‘T’ for Teen rating with the violence involved. Some of the female characters are dressed in a questionable manner, but the lack of detail does not reach the enticement to lust level.

The sounds were a bit of a disappointment for me in Legend of the Dragon. I was hoping for some major voice acting to learn more about the cartoon. The music is decent, and goes along quite well with the eastern themes.

If you can get by the gameplay issues, then there can be a lot of replay value. I had trouble with the next section, and the eastern religious themes. There are a few unlockables, and enough attacks to memorize to keep a lot of players busy. Fans of the show may take great interest in this video game.

The controls work great at times, and then other times I had trouble making the most basic thing work. The complexity of some of the moves gave me problems as well. Legend of the Dragon could teach some wonderful coordination between the two Wii controllers. The rings are pretty small, and it is really easy to knock the opponent out of the ring, which is a problem in the mission mode. I also had problems remembering which attacks were which thus using up my bar trying different ones.

I have two sons who really enjoy fighting with one another. I get to referee them a lot, and stop them from hurting one another. Legend of the Dragon feels a lot like that. Thankfully there is no blood, or gore, and as far as fighting games go this one is much tamer than most on the market.
