Labyrinth

UFO Interactive recently flew into the Family Friendly Gaming radar. I am honored to write the first review of a video game for this company. Labyrinth for the Nintendo DS is an interesting little puzzle game where the player guides a ball to the goal. This is done by rotating the entire screen around so the ball can be navigated around obstacles. This is not a new concept as there was a Playstation video game based on this concept, and other video games have incorporated this game play mechanic. It can still be fun if implemented properly. With Taito being involved with this game there was a good chance this Nintendo DS video game would be a hit.

The first thing I noticed about Labyrinth was the graphics. I thought I was playing a Gameboy Advance video game. The graphics, especially words are small. In many cases too small for this reviewer. There is also an image of a woman showing off cleavage. This enticement to lust issue was not needed and takes away from Labyrinth.

The music in Labyrinth is okay. It did not stick in my head, nor did it bother me. What did bother me were some of the special effects sounds. Trying to beat a level in a few seconds can be challenging enough without the game aggravating the player when a minor mistake is made.

I was shocked with how short Labyrinth is. I beat it in like an hour. There are some additional sections unlocked after beating the last section. But even with that there is not a lot of replay value in this Nintendo DS video game. Labyrinth does award the player with different balls, and a decent customization section. The problem is I could not tell the difference when I tried different balls.

There are two control schemes in Labyrinth. The first is the touch screen (and ‘X’ button), which works wonderfully in the first few sections of Labyrinth. After that it is nearly worthless. In fact it is nearly impossible to use the stylus and press the ‘X’ button if you are right handed. The next control scheme is the directional pad, and ‘X’ button. This works beautifully throughout the entire game.

Labyrinth had so much potential. I can forgive the bad graphics, and annoying sounds. I would love to see a sequel to this game if a few changes were made. Puzzle games like this one need more levels, and women do not need to be shown dressed inappropriately. This kind of a video game may work better on the Nintendo Wii home console.
