Gallop Racer 2004

Having tried almost every entry in the series, I can say that Gallop Racer 2004 stands out as probably the best in the series. If you like horse racing, this is the game for you.

Graphically, this game depends on where you are looking. If you like pretty scenery, this is not the game for you. However, if you like to see great horses, then you’ve come to the right place. And, as this game is all about the horses, I think it’s a good trade off.

As for sound, if you have played horse racing games, you are probably familiar with the annoying announcer who won’t stop talking. One of the best things about this game is that the announcer mainly remains silent, just speaking up at the key points. The music is decent, fitting for the game.

Controls can be an issue in this game though. The spurt from the gate is a bit finicky. Also, it can be easy to be blocked in at the end if unprepared. Most gimmicks just require time to master, but this game does come with a learning curve. One neat feature is the slot machine. It might seem like betting, but if you watch it, it’s really not; the slots tell you how well you are doing. Run a great race and you’ll get triple 7s, allowing a horrible horse to sometimes even win. It’s a wonderful addition.

The game as a whole is massive. You start off picking a jockey (from 8 characters) and then a trainer to work with. It’s a rather realistic approach, as you start with only racing the horses not scheduled to win, working up your stats to become a known jockey. Eventually, you’ll have tons of your own horses to ride, but you’ll have to earn them first. The sheer number of horses is nice, and that number grows exponentially when you add your own bred horses to the mix. Add many challenging titles to earn, buildings to unlock and upgrade, and hidden surprises for the best racers, and you won’t even notice that you’ve spent over 100 hours in the game.

This game is all about the horse racing, and it shows. Innovative slots, tons of horses, loads of unlockables and events, and you have a great game for horse fans. To top it off, this game is fully family friendly.
