El Tigre The Adventures of Manny Rivera

THQ normally sends some of the best Family Friendly video games. There are however a few exceptions along the way. After all not everything can be the greatest on the planet. El Tigre The Adventures of Manny Rivera on the Playstation 2 (PS2) is based on the Nickelodeon cartoon. The graphical style of the cartoon is what a lot of cartoons have gone to lately - which looks poor to me. The little boy spins his ‘T’ shaped belt buckle to turn into El Tigre (editor: the tiger in Spanish for those curious). Claws and a tail come with the costume. In some ways he looks like a Mexican professional wrestler - at least to me. This PS2 video game has four long levels that take anywhere from ten to twenty minutes to complete.

Most Nickelodeon based video games have bright visuals, but El Tigre The Adventures of Manny Rivera is really drab. There are a lot of the darker colors used in this Playstation 2 video game. The details are around average. El Tigre can slash the strange looking enemies to receive Macho (little gold coin looking items that are collected), but the main game play mechanic is to jump around. There is a cemetery level with skeletons, and ghost looking characters.

El Tigre The Adventures of Manny Rivera has a definite Mexican theme to it. I really had little idea what was going on in the story since names of the characters and places made little sense. I did like the message in the cartoon about people changing from their evil ways. That made serious points with me. Some of the music can get annoying after a time.

El Tigre The Adventures of Manny Rivera really suffers in the replay and extras department. There are a few extras in this video game, but not a lot. With four levels, and two secret levels to play this game can be beaten in a couple of hours. Five hours is the most time I can see any child spending on this game. Knowing that can help you determine what price to pay for this PS2 game. Fans of the show will be interested.

El Tigre The Adventures of Manny Rivera controls really well. Some of the jumps can become insanely difficult at first. Each level has a pattern to the lengthy jump sequences. Once the player finds that pattern it is very easy to complete that section. El Tigre The Adventures of Manny Rivera was not a chore, but it was not also the best time I have had playing a video game.

I think El Tigre is trying to stop some devil like character in the story this video game implores. This is an interesting concept, however one needs to turn to God for the strength not a belt buckle. Timing and hand eye coordination can be learned from this video game.
