Dragon Quest IV Chapters of the Chosen

The Dragon Quest series has long been recognized as one of the classic franchises that has lasted a very long time. Back in the day fanboys of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest would argue which series was the better one. In Japan it was Dragon Quest, and in America it was Final Fantasy. Since Square and Enix have merged there have been few arguments on which series is better. The RPG Master remembers the original Dragon Warrior IV on the NES, and this remake has added a chapter. The Dragon Quest, and Dragon Warrior series were the same, just a different name given to different countries. Part of the regionalization of video games that used to be a lot better. More on that in a bit.

Dragon Quest IV on the DS has some nice little 3D graphics, and generally vibrant colors. There is the issues of violence, enticement to lust, and of course more violence. Generally the violence is against monsters that look like animals. The details were a little bit of a disappointment to this reviewer.

Dragon Quest IV has spectacular music that grabs the player and brings them right into the game. The biggest issue with the dialog in this game is the whole goddess thing. It makes little sense to the RPG Master that this DS game was not regionalized for the overwhelming super majority of Americans that believe in God, and not a goddess. There are those also talking about drinking, and the game does not condemn that behavior.

Dragon Quest IV has an okay length to it, but it seems shorter than a lot of role playing games on the DS market to this reviewer. There are a lot of items, and the leveling up requirements have been fast tracked.

Dragon Quest IV uses the standard button control scheme which functions just fine. Some touch screen choices would have been nice in the RPG Master’s expert opinion. If you can get by the whole goddess problem, then there is some fun to be had in this game. There are a lot of cliches to the story, but this is an older game.

There were a lot of high hopes for Dragon Quest IV when this review started. Helping others is one major lessons in this game, as well as fighting evil. Those lessons are very important, and well received. The biggest problem with Dragon Quest IV is how it was not regionalized in the religious aspects. Things like the enticement to lust also pull this game down, and thats sad.
