Dora the Explorer Dora Saves the Mermaids

Dora the Explorer Dora Saves the Mermaids on the Playstation 2 (PS2) does a lot of things right, and needs improvement in a few areas. An octopus is dumping trash all over the sea, and it is up to Dora to acquire the magic crown of the mermaids, and return it to them so all the trash can be wished away. This is a kids game for all of those out there snickering. Boots is along for the ride as he helps Dora find hidden items at numerous locations. Dora even gets to transform into a mermaid and play a portion of the game underwater. The map, and backpack are present in this home console version of Dora the Explorer.

The visuals in Dora the Explorer Dora Saves the Mermaids is in the cel shading style. There are some nice colors, and details used throughout the game. There are also a lot of recycled images found throughout the game. Most kids will not mind, and enjoy the lively world, especially all the butterflies that will populate the screen when certain areas are walked through.

Dora the Explorer Dora Saves the Mermaids has great voice acting, and wonderful encouragement. This PS2 game does not let the player fail. It encourages the child to try again. Some Spanish words can also be learned as well as some simple counting.

The biggest problem I have with Dora the Explorer Dora Saves the Mermaids is the replay, and extras. There are plenty of areas where things are hidden, but they only contain the same item. A few secrets would have been nice. Also some reason to replay the game would have helped.

Dora controls nicely most of the time. There was some lag in certain spots where the ‘X’ button could be pressed to skip a cut scene. The levels are simple enough, with only one path to take from start to finish. Certain areas also make sure the player can only go forward. There is some fun to be had in this game, but kids we let try it like Go Diego Go Safari Rescue better.

Dora the Explorer Dora Saves the Mermaids may not be as good of a PS2 game as Dora the Explorer Journey to the Purple Planet, but it is still a worthy entry into the kid gaming foray. I would like to see more games like this one, especially if it is lengthened and some replay is added.
