Digimon World Data Squad
SCORE: 61
There are times that the RPG Master has enjoyed certain old school role playing games. Digimon World Data Squad does not fit into one of those times. There are a lot of battles to go through, and each fight takes awhile to complete. The Digimon obey their human masters, and act a lot like soldiers. However there is a deep emotional system where the Digimon needs to be angered, cheered up, etc. Each human character has one digimon, and the team is built by having additional humans join. Each characters digimon can do a digisoul charge where they change into an entirely different digimon. This can be good or bad depending on what they digivolve into.
The cel shading in the graphics just does not work for Digimon World Data Squad. Trying to create a digital world in that artistic style did not fit either. There are a few female characters dressed in a questionable fashion, however the cel shading takes away any enticement to lust. There is a lot of fighting, which means a lot of the digital monsters attacking one another. At least one human character takes part of the soul of the wild digimon to power the digivolve of his digimon. Animations take too long as well.
There is some bad language in this game, which is weird since digimon is a childrens franchise. There is also some verbal insults, and name calling that you do not want your children repeating. The music is nice, even a little disco sounding at times. Voice acting does not always sound right.
If you are really into digimon, and do not mind a lot of battles then you will find a lot of replay value to this game. The dungeons are large enough to keep you occupied for a couple of weeks. The digisoul charging aspect of this game is very involved, but you may not get to keep certain digimon for very long.
The controls in Digimon World Data Squad have one glaring flaw - no camera movement. Well there is a zoom in and zoom out, but no rotation of the viewpoint. This led to missing certain paths, and getting into even more fights. There is also a lag between when a command is given and when it is performed. This reviewer fell asleep playing this game.
There is a lot of evolving
into other monsters, and many of the characters are after revenge. The
seven deadly sins are present as card keys. Saving lost children is the
main storyline though.
