Chicken Hunter

Chicken Hunter on the Nintendo DS is the closest thing to Duck Hunt I have played in a very long time. Mumbo Jumbo goes beyond the shoot the chickens, with modes that are part shooter and part puzzle. There is also a little racing game that is surprisingly fun. The screen scrolls to add some spice to this action. Chicken Hunter earns its E10+ rating from the ESRB, even though the violence is at the level of going out hunting. Remember to not shoot the chickens that surrender, otherwise points will be lost. The same goes for shooting certain items on the farm.

There are plenty of cool colors used in Chicken Hunter. I adore the animation and character of the different chickens. The details are wonderful, especially the little ponds in certain areas. Chickens fall out of the sky, and fall down when shot. Their bodies vanish quickly, and the puzzle aspect of this Nintendo DS video game does not even feel violent.

The sounds are nice in Chicken Hunter. I enjoyed the music, although it is not the best I have heard. By that I mean it fits the game, and it does not annoy me. On the flip side it did not stay with me too long after playing Chicken Hunter. If guns firing bother you, then you might have a problem with the sound effects.

My first impressions of the replay value of Chicken Hunter were not very favorable. Then I started enjoying the different modes (except for weights). Beating the high score is the main goal, however there is also the goal of finding two unlockable bonus games. If you are over the age of ten then Chicken Hunter is a game you will find worth your hard earned dollars.

The touch screen of the Nintendo DS is perfectly suited for Chicken Hunter. Mumbo Jumbo got the controls just right in my opinion. The only improvement I can think of is to allow more of a destructible environment, especially when it comes to the leaves in trees. A way to extend the timer would have been nice as well.

Duck Hunt is one of the known classics in the video game industry, and I am baffled why it has taken so long for a game like it to appear on the Nintendo DS. Sure there have been hunting games, but nothing comes to mind that had an arcade feel to it. I would love to see some sequels to Chicken Hunter, especially if a time booster is included. Family Friendly Gaming is going to go on record with this truth - chickens can fly so this game is accurate in that aspect.
