Charlottes Web

Charlotte’s Web has thrilled families for quite some time now. The progression of Wilbur understanding about how we are only on this planet earth for a short time, coping with death, and accepting the changes it brings. Charlotte is the spider who helps Wilbur (the pig) avoid becoming ham and bacon on the breakfast table. Sega released this Nintendo DS game based on the live action adaption of the well known story. Players play as Wilbur, and/or Templeton (the rat) throughout four unique environments. There are also parts where Fern cares for Wilbur, and the bottom touch screen is utilized in a most efficient manner.

Graphically Charlotte’s Web is okay in some parts, and really shines in others. The still shots from the movie are spectacular. Some of the animal models are great, but others (i.e. Wilbur) seem to be a little sub par for the Nintendo DS. There are also parts of this game that are bright and colorful. On the flip side there are areas of this game where the graphics seem pretty bland (like in the barn). There is some cartoon violence as Wilbur can jump on, or kick animals that are deemed as bad by the game. The animals once hit run off the screen. This lead to a little confusion as first not knowing if they had been vanquished or not.

In order to start a level the player must wake up Wilbur by talking to him through the microphone on the Nintendo DS. This really shows that Sega is finding some intriguing ways to use the variety of features on the Nintendo DS. The music in Charlotte’s Web is very pleasant indeed. The sounds are all very crisp and clear. Most of the sounds work well in this game.

Sega has seriously outdone themselves in the replay/extras department of Charlotte’s Web. There are plenty of story related mini games, different play modes, and movie content. More than one person can play this game at a time. In my humble opinion this game is worth your hard earned dollars.

The controls work generally well in Charlotte’s Web on the Nintendo DS. There were a few areas where we ran into level design flaws that stopped us cold. The use of the touch screen to clean Wilbur was a very nice feature that Sega included. This is also a game that I found to be a lot of fun to play. A generally reading ability is needed in order to learn the instructions to play this game, or an adult who can read them to a child.

I was very interested in Charlotte’s Web once Sega sent us their press releases on it. This is the kind of a game that is right up the Family Friendly Gaming alley. The subject matter of friendship, coping with death, change, and life in generally is such wonderful lessons. While playing this game, I had to help out the other animals in a plethora of different quests that was totally awesome. Sega did a decent job with this game, and I would love to see more games like this one released in the future.
