Catan

Catan is a downloadable game on the Xbox 360 under Xbox Live. Microsoft was gracious enough to allow users to freely download a demo of the game before they decide to buy it. Ultimately this is a board game done on a video game console. Players build roads, settlements, cities, and collect specific resources. The game handles all of the complex issues so players are not bogged down trying to comprehend all of the rules.

Soldiers can be sent out to steal resources from the other players. Catan also allows players to trade with one another, and to do port trading (which is a lot more expensive). Big Huge Games did a nice job with this game in the graphical department, even though this game does not push the limits of the Xbox 360 in any way, shape or means. It still looks nice, and there are plenty of special effects to keep graphic hounds interested.

This is a four player game where the computer can step in if you do not have that many people locally, or do not have a paid for Xbox Gold account. The sounds seemed a little sub par to the WMG. There were some sounds with special effects, but most of the game was deafly silent. One game can take some time, and players can replay for quite a few months. The controls handle beautifully, and there are absolutely no complaints there. This game has quite an intelligent design, and a flare for the strategy. The Family Friendly Factor is a toss up for the WMG. It is nice that this game brings people together for some fun competition.

On the down side Catan teaches players to back stab other players, and look out for themselves. The computer controlled characters do not hold grudges after the player steals from them, but a human one may not trade in the very next turn. If you have an Xbox 360, this is one where you may want to do a free demo download, and see if you like it.
