Cake Mania

While other gaming magazines, and sites have men play the video games geared towards girls, Family Friendly Gaming allows women the right to play video games designed for their sex. Those men at those other places always describe women as a mystery and their reviews of girl games only shows how out of touch they really are. Cake Mania on the Nintendo DS is all about serving others (editor: something else those other magz and sitez totally miss). The teenage girl Jill is out to take on the big mega store, and make her grandparents bakery re-open. The storyline is all about the little girl winning against the big boys. Money is earned and each level is an actual month of the year.

The visual department of Cake Mania is very bright and colorful. In fact I like the pinks, purples, and reds that are used throughout this video game. The details are okay, but much of the game looks like a port from the Gameboy Advance. Each of the different cake shapes is easily identifiable, as are the in game characters. Wholesome images are used properly, and I did not find any offensive images. There are certain un-needed characters dressed up like cupid, eastern bunnies, etc.

The special effect sounds work beautifully in Cake Mania. The ding of the oven reminds me of those traditional, and classic ranges. Majesco Entertainment did a great job with the music, and I found it soothing in times of frantic service. All of these sounds were distinctive, and very clear. I also did not hear any offensive sounds in this video game at all.

Majesco Entertainment included a fair amount of different kitchen items to purchase in order to make the cake creation, and decoration more efficient. There are few reasons to replay a level, but the difficulty will mean this game will take a few weeks to complete. Since Cake Mania can be found for just under twenty US Dollars I feel it is worth your hard earned dollars, especially if you like the next paragraph.

Cake Mania controls nicely, and the layout works great. The action can get a little hectic as major planning and multi-tasking must be performed almost flawlessly to complete later levels. I would have liked the ability to take a more leisurely pace, and to be able to talk to the customers, and build some friendships. I had fun at times in this game.

Cake Mania teaches that servanthood is certainly hard work. I wish it would have taught more about the rewards of serving others. It also would have been nice to have more friendship building. This is the kind of a game that the video game industry needs to improve its tarnished image. A sequel to this game would be great. This game is not perfect, however it is one of the safer games on the market for your children (editor: or even yourself). Girls definitely need to check out Cake Mania, and realize the joys of cooking. Remember girls the way to a man’s heart is through his tummy.
