Bolt

Bolt is a cute little Disney movie that has spawned a video game release from Disney Interactive Studios. This video game is on the Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2 (PS2), Playstation 3 (PS3), Personal Computer (PC) and Xbox 360. Gamers get to take on the role of a super dog in this action adventure hack and slash (more like bark and bite) game that also includes a few puzzle elements. Those puzzle elements are mainly in line with looking around and finding the next switch. Gamers get to play two kinds of levels, the stealth levels wiht the little girl Penny, and the previously mentioned levels with Bolt.

Finding those switches can be fun especially with the camera in this game. The camera never got me killed, but at times it was not helping me find the next path to where I would find the next switch (editor: in order to progress). There is some diversity in the graphics and some nice details. There are some dark levels, and the zoomed back graphics in some levels were disappointing. The cut scene movies are DVD quality, and make me want to see the movie. There is a lot of fighting, and it gets redundant.

I enjoyed the voice acting in Bolt, and the little super doggie has a lot of character to him. There are a lot of canine humor in Bolt that you will either laugh at, or find corny. I got a few giggles, and children I had play this game laughed out loud. The barking super power is one of the special treats in this game in this reviewer's extremely always humble opinion. The fighting sounds got a little old, and I would have liked a little less of that.

A lot of movie based games (excluding true gems like Cars) are short, and do not include a lot of unlockable content. There is some unlockable content, but the length of Bolt is actually impressive. Sadly some of that is because of repetitive fighting, but still. Only one player can play Bolt at a time, so this is one of those games Family Friendly Gaming says ya'll can use to teach patience.

All in all the controls are decent in Bolt. The 3D graphics with some of the angles of the jumps can lead to quick deaths. Disney Interactive Studios included unlimited continues so only a few things need to be repeated (generally). This can lead to frustration, and certainly did with me a few times. I perservered though, and adjusted the way I perceived things. It only took a few tries to figured those jumps out, and the next time I was much quicker at solving the problem.

I like the storyline of helping others out, and stopping the evil ones. The methods of using violence as the ends to those means is the issue I have. If there was more puzzle elements and less bark and bite then I would have been a lot more into Bolt. The interesting thing is children I let try this game were into it. I have gotten a real interest into this franchise thanks to this game.
