Beijing 2008

The Olympic Games are the ultimate in sports. Well they used to be, before things like table tennis were let in. I remember running Track all those years ago in high school, and absolutely loving the thrill of the wind in my face. Beijing 2008 on the Xbox 360 does not quite give me the wind in my face, but it is very close. Sega thankfully kept all the political intrigue (with human rights violations for example) out of this video game. If you read Paul’s review you know to expect a difficult Track & Field kind of video game. That is right, however with a little practice most of these games can be mastered. The most difficult ones to master are ones that involved running.

Beijing 2008 is the most realistic Olympic Games sports title I have ever played. The facial expressions, uniforms, settings, and officials have exceptional layering of details. The animations of say the officials seem a little sluggish to me. The athletes themselves make me feel like I am watching instead of pretending to participate.

I have been in stadiums for sporting events, and used to a lot of crowd noise. At my age, my ears do not appreciate that. So it is my pleasure to report the crowd noise will not deafen you in this Xbox 360 video game. The mark, and set before the gun shot were not always as audible as I would have liked. The music adds a majestic quality to the Olympics.

I love digging into a sports game, and figuring out how they tick. There are a lot of Olympic Games for me to dig into in Beijing 2008. If you like the Olympics then you will most likely enjoy this Xbox 360 video game. The diving games are by far my favorites.

Sega made sure an intelligent tutorial was included in Beijing 2008. My only problem with the tutorial is how small the buttons are on the screen. It would have been an improvement to be able to pause the tutorial (editor: the manual includes the buttons for the events). I also wish there had been more options for the control schemes. I had a blast playing Beijing 2008 on the Xbox 360, and hope it does well. It may be four more years before we see another game like this one.

I have a lot of respect for Olympic athletes. The countless hours of training they have to go through in order to compete on the world stage is astounding. Sega went for the gold with Beijing 2008, and you get to decide if they win that medal or not. Beijing 2008 teaches concentration, attention to detail, and precise timing. Maybe a gamer or two will start training.
