Banjo-Kazooie Nuts Bolts

I remember back in the day when Rare was one of the premiere developers in the video game industry. In fact almost all their games were golden in the eye of most beholders. Now it seems like they have gotten cynical, unhappy and generally lost the formula to what a family friendly title is. Sure they did the Viva Pinata games, and those were good. I had some high expectations going into Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts. I hoped for some classic platforming action, and to keep it out of the gutter (still trying to forget that atrocity Conker). Rare decided to have Banjo and Kazooie drive vehicles around. Before you completely freak out, you do get to build and customize these vehicles. Some of the same platform action happens, just inside a vehicle now. The witch is back, but this time a pong faced character is in control.

Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts has a crisp and clean look to it. There are some images like a hopping around head that could scare children. This Xbox 360 game also contains cartoon violence. Surprisingly I found there to be less in this game than the previous Banjo Kazooie video games.

The language in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts gave me a headache. Characters are constantly being insulted, and the original games are also attacked routinely. Fans of the original games (like myself) get sick of the game insulting us over and over again. The attempts at humor fall flat on their face like a George Carlin routine.

Rare included the right amount of customization, and unlockables in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts. If you get into the game play, then there is a lot to play around with. There are also online modes, and designs that can be shared.

Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts controls are just fine. I ran into no issues. Well that is not entirely true. I do have an issue with the entire vehicle attempt at a platformer. I get it that Rare wanted to do something different, but this is not as much fun as the platformers of the past. Look Capcom released a Megaman game that was a throwback to the 8-bit era. A 64-bit era style of game would have been great.

Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts feels like it was being pulled in different directions at the same time. It hurts the game overall because completely going one direction or the other would have been better in my opinion. I hope for a different kind of a sequel.
