Zippy the circle
SCORE: 77
In a great many ways Zippy
the Circle on the Personal Computer (PC) is a great improvement from ZJ
the Ball. Breakthrough Gaming is making strides in their video game
development. With that said, this is still an independent developer;
which means they are lesser known, and a smaller company (than most game
developers). There are quite a few different game styles in this game
from side scrolling action adventure to rolling a ball around a level.
Unexpected gameplay certainly described Zippy the Circle quite well. The
characters are done in 2D graphics, and they play in 3D levels (think
Paper Mario). There is a Christian message in the thirteen exciting
levels of this game. Zippy is sent off on a quest to save his sister
Tina, and the rest of his town. Please note that no circles were hurt in
the creation, development, release, sale, and/or playing of this game.
Graphically this game is
an interesting collage. The use of 2D characters with 3D environments is
an interesting experiment that does not go over too well with this
reviewer. The graphics are bright and colorful. There are a lot more
models in this game than in ZJ the Ball. The cut scenes are nicely done
with larger models of the characters talking to one another. There are
images in this game that promote the traditional family, and that
promote a relationship with God. All of these images are used in the
proper manner.
The sounds in this game
are done really well, and quite rockish (at least to this reviewer).
These sounds work well, and the music is quite cheerful. Certain levels
that require speed - really emphasize that in the musical department.
There are no complaints from this reviewer concerning the sounds
department.
If the player can perform
specific tasks (like get through all of the hoops in a level, or beat it
under a certain time limit) in each of the thirteen levels, then a
special code is given that can be used in a future version of this game.
Once the game is beaten, then levels can be replayed in whatever order
the player wishes. This game is on sale for $9.95 (plus shipping), so
this reviewer feels that it is worth the money.
This game plays really
well, which is amazing considering how many different game styles are
involved. The rolling of the marble around those levels was especially
crisp. The control design on the keyboard works quite nicely. This was a
fun game to play, even though it is a little short (or maybe this
reviewer's gaming skills are too advanced).
Near the beginning of this
review it was mentioned that no circles were harmed. In fact no one was
harmed in this game at all. The bad guy kidnapped some villagers from an
island to search for some magical artifacts (which he never finds by the
way). None of those character (err or were they shapes) were harmed.
Zippy does no harm, in fact he avoids violence, and thinks the best of
people. The end of the game (spoiler coming) has the bad guy turning
from his wicked ways and asking for forgiveness. Jail time, and failure
at his task was also the earthly punishment for his crimes. This game is
safe for the entire family, and has some wonderful teachings in it. This
game was a joy to play and review. This reviewer would love a sequel,
especially if they go to full 3D (including the game characters). After
ZJ the Ball, this reviewer has high expectations from Breakthrough
Gaming, and is happy to see improvements.
