Wild Arms 5
SCORE: 81
Xseed Games must be listening to Family Friendly Gaming as a lot of the problems in Wild Arms 4, have been cleaned up in Wild Arms 5. This is an encouraging sign to the health of the video game industry. The western themed role playing series is back on the Playstation 2. The hex battle system is also back (editor: yes we know some of ya’ll hate it). This game includes a lot of the RPG cliches, and does not stray too far from tried and true concepts.
The graphics in Wild Arms 5 are dusty, which goes along with the theme quite well. There are a lot of re-used graphics in different dungeons. In fact a lot of the dungeons look the same in certain sections. The cut scenes of the characters are really cool to watch. There are a few female characters that are dressed in an inappropriate manner. This is one of the areas that has been improved drastically. There is also violence in regards to killing off hordes of monsters.
There is a whistling tune found within Wild Arms 5 that is still with me. That is a testament to the job the developer did on creating this PS2 video game. There are some language issues with certain characters. Again this is another area that was improved greatly.
Role playing games usually have a lot of items to find, things to create, stats to adjust, etc. Wild Arms 5 is no exception. The older members of the family that are into this kind of a game will find a long story, and a lot of replay value. The 10th Anniversary edition also includes a really neat book with artwork from the entire Wild Arms series.
The characters in the game have their hitpoints restored after each and every fight in Wild Arms 5. This is needed because the monsters can easily take away a third to half of a characters hit points in one attack. The hex system is one of the more interesting battle systems in all of the role playing genre. It really feels more like an attempt to be different though. With that said it has been improved upon from Wild Arms 4.
There are some moral and
ethical issues touched upon in Wild Arms 5. One of the shining aspects
of this game is the positive attitude the main character has. He is
always looking for the good in others, even after they have wronged him.
The RPG Master was very impressed to see that in this Playstation 2
video game.
