Wario Master of Disguise
SCORE: 85
Wario Master of Disguise
on the Nintendo DS is one of the biggest surprises this year. Wario gets
inspiration from a television show about a thief, and winds up taking
his magical wand and searching for treasure. The wand teaches the player
how to draw certain shapes that grant Wario special powers in the form
of different suits. There are plenty of puzzles in this game that the
ESRB gave an ‘E10+’ for Everyone 10 years old or older. The descriptors
are Crude Humor, and Mild Cartoon Violence.
The graphics in Wario
Master of Disguise are very bright and colorful. In fact the
environments are very lush, and detailed. There is cartoon violence as
Wario can shoot, breath fire, jump on, and other forms of disposing of
the cartoon enemies in this game. Out of all of Wario’s costumes there
was only one that bothered me - Wicked Wario. Wicked Wario looks like a
devil outfit. It is cartoonish, but still made me feel uneasy.
I love cheerful,
uplifting, and positive music. Wario Master of Disguise has some very
nice music that brings a smile to my face. All of the sounds but one
work beautifully in this game. That one sound is Wario’s laugh, which is
just freaky. This game also has a lot of junior high style name calling
(i.e. jerk, buffoon), and Wario has a real bad attitude of selfishness.
Nintendo has high standards of any video game that uses any of their
established characters. Wario Master of Disguise is no different, and
there is plenty of items to find, secrets to discover, and play value to
be found. The difficulty of this game is one of the biggest surprises,
and in my humble opinion this game can be worth your money if you are
patient with learning all the different suits, and taking time to think
about how to solve puzzles.
The level design in Wario
Master of Disguise is pure genius. Complex is another way to describe
it, and there are some real brain teasers in here as well. The controls,
especially the bottom screen of the Nintendo DS function perfectly. The
changing of different suits is smooth, and I found a lot of fun in this
one. The mini games by which treasures are acquired are a lot of fun,
but can get tedious near the end.
The different characters
insulting one another is very noticeable in this game, as is some really
bad attitudes. I would recommend an age of a teenager as a minimum for
this game, and not because of content. The difficulty of some of the
puzzles, and mini games is going to be above those of most children. It
was nice that the magic wand was trying to correct Wario in the mistakes
he was making. The whole disguises concept was an interesting that
should be explored in future games.
