The Golden Compass

Based on the recent movie, the Golden Compass on the Wii is a perfect example of poor movie to game translation and, was enough for me to know that I would have no interest in seeing the movie any time soon. I realize that the Wii is the most underpowered system of the current generation of systems but the graphics in the game were very dull and uninspired. The characters all seemed very bland and didn’t have very much detail to them. There were a number of glitches throughout the game that while didn’t interrupt gameplay, were minor nuisances that helped take away from the experience of the game.

Sounds in the game were also uninspired. The music was ok but there were some sound effects that were off and I even came across a point were the sounds were replaced by a developer’s voice saying “There will be music here”. The voice acting was ok for the most part but the two main characters had voices so close that I lost track of who was speaking sometimes.

Once you get through the game, there is really nothing to bring you back to play again. During the game, the only real thing that you find and unlock is the symbols to the alethiometer. This isn’t very fun though as it basically requires you to move your cursor around the screen until you happen to come by a symbol. Most of the time, they are in places that are not real hard to miss so it isn’t all that much fun.

Since I played the Wii version, I was afraid the game would overuse the motion controls of the Wii remote. Luckily, the game allows you to play by using either motions or buttons on the remote and nunchuck. This made it less frustrating to get through the game but it was still not a great experience. Throughout the game you are required to play pointless mini-games that really have nothing to do with anything other than to just move along the conversations with NPC’s. They get very repetitive and you quickly come to dread being required to do more of them. I found the game to be quite boring since you mainly go from place to place just talking to people with small bits of action mixed in here and there. Also, the story in the game was hard to follow and it seems that you would have to have seen the movie to fully understand what was going on throughout the game.

After all the technical problems with the game, the lack of family friendliness really finished this game from being of any value. The entire game is based on deceiving people and evading trouble by sneaking around and getting into things you are not suppose to be. Even though the main character is trying to help other kids, she does it in a way that is sneaky and almost dishonest. Even her name lends itself to her character trait of deception. Finally, the game seemed to have a dark undertone for a game that was suppose to be based on a movie aimed at children. This is not a game that I would recommend to anyone, child or adult.
