Ratatouille

There is a disturbing trend in the video game industry lately. That trend is some video games that should be the best versions are actually the worst. The Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 (PS3) versions are getting the lowest score from Family Friendly Gaming, and for good reason. This is supposed to be a kids game, but half of the time I was lost as to where to go next (or what to do next). The hints were non-existent, but the game would tell me over and over again to do something. An example would be to find something to scare off a dog. No clue as to where to find this item, but the game kept repeating the objective. Children asking me: “are we there yet?” has a lesser degree of irritation.

The details in the Xbox 360 version of Ratatouille have a nice shine and look to them. There are some good uses of a variety of colors in Ratatouille as well. The animals look realistic, especially the rats. I know they are supposed to be heroes, but I still get a little squeamish when looking at a rodent. There is some mild violence with the ability to use a ball to roll over enemies. I also found myself fighting with the camera.

The voices found within Ratatouille are pretty nice to listen to. Once I get a chance to watch this movie with my family, I expect the sound bytes to be on the same level. I usually prefer to wait for the DVD anyways, since patience is one of those lessons I have learned. I did not come across any offensive sounds while playing this French flavored title.

THQ included quite a few different little interesting mini games, and secrets to unlock. If you can figure out where to go in certain areas, then enough extras are included.

Ratatouille plays similar to most platformers with a few exceptions. Trying to figure out what to do next can be frustrating. A kids game should spell it out for the kids not have them expect mom and/or dad to play the game for them. Which became a real problem for me because I had a lot of trouble figuring out where to go next.

When I started to play Ratatouille on the Xbox 360 I was hoping to be able to recommend this game to all our wonderful readers. The lesson of helping others is found, along with concentrating to complete certain areas. The problems with direction, and camera really bring this game down. Enjoy the movie, and other versions.
