Petz Catz 2

It is amazing to see how the Petz line up has been expanding over recent years. Ubisoft knows they have a hit on their hands, as their treatment of the franchise reflects. The Playstation 2 version of Catz 2 is more than just a digital pet simulator. An entire story has been written with an island inhabited by felines. There are shops, a zoo, an aquarium, houses, ships, and plenty of fascinating kitty cat characters. In a lot of ways Catz 2 could be considered a role playing game. The only distinction is this PS2 video game does not include the monotonous violence in most RPG’s. The player gets to perform quite a few quests to help the cats of this fantasy world.

The ESRB gave Catz 2 an ‘E’ for Everyone rating with Mild Fantasy Violence being the only descriptor. Late in the game, the player learns how to pick up, and throw a rock at enemies. This stuns them only. That is the only visual violence in this game, and seems rather light to this reviewer. The graphics look decent on the Playstation 2. A little more color variety would improve the menu screens. The cats look realistic enough to me, and I had kittens grow into cats at my parents house as a child.

I was not expecting so much dialogue in Catz 2. In fact I thought I would just be playing with a cat. The sounds of the cats as they talk to one another is the same sounds as a cat in your home. This was really neat to hear, and adds a dimension to Catz 2 on the PS2. I found the music to be soothing.

Ubisoft made sure that a lengthy story, and plenty of side quests was included. There are also plenty of accessories to unlock and wear. Mini games are unlocked and then are playable. These range from easy fun to challenging. If you are a cat person, or into a different kind of RPG, then Catz 2 is worth your money.

The controls in Catz 2 for the PS2 work beautifully. I love how running is the standard movement (not walking), and the placement of the buttons. There are plenty of areas to explore, and their layout is intelligent. The game also gives the player instructions about where to go next. A basic reading ability is needed in order to follow these directions. I found Catz 2 to be a lot of fun.

My hat goes off to Ubisoft for releasing Catz 2 on the PS2. This is the kind of video game we at Family Friendly Gaming have been calling for. Catz 2 is fun, fresh, light hearted, and safe for the entire family. I really wish there were more video games like this one. I am hoping for sequels, especially if jumping is added.
