NBA 07

I played a lot of basketball as a kid, young adult, and even adult. I have been on teams at a couple of different levels. This Sony Computer Entertainment of America version of basketball - NBA 07 does a decent job of capturing the feel of the game, but there are better basketball games on the market. This Playstation 2 game is subtitled: ‘The Life Vol 2’ for a reason. That reason is it takes the player behind the scenes to show what goes on in the life of a NBA superstar. All of the glories, and anguish that go along with climbing the ladder to become MVP of the league. All of the NBA teams are included as well as some throwback teams. One of the really cool new features is the Open Shot indicator that lets the player know when they are open from defensive pressure. The EyeToy can be used to put your very own picture on an NBA player. Kobe Bryant is the cover athlete.

Graphically NBA 07 is pretty bright and colorful in so many areas, especially the hardwood floor. The details are pretty decent, but lagging a little behind EA, and Sega’s basketball games. The artwork is decent in many areas, and a little bland in others. The courts are represented well, but the crowd is extremely generic. Close ups are done well, but the regular game play feels a little far off graphically.

The sounds are very crisp and clear throughout the game. The music is not the style I am used to, but it can be turned off. The sounds work a little above average. Other basketball games I have played really make me feel like I am on the court playing a basketball game. Sony did a decent job of this in the sounds department, but in comparison they are lagging behind EA, and Sega a little bit. The announcers usually do a good job, with an occasional mistake (editor: but EA and Sega also have the same problems).

Sony did an average job of including a lot in this game. The Life Vol 2 is a fascinating feature for those interested in getting behind the scenes and dealing with what pro ball players have to handle. There are certainly some reasons to replay this game, with all the of the different basketball teams, and features included. Online features await the player as long as you have the network adapter on your PS2.

The controls work decently, and the design works well. The layouts of the courts work in a decent manner as well. Even though I feel there are better basketball games out there, this one is still fun to play.

NBA 07 is safe for the entire family, and promotes some family values. Basketball can be used to teach teamwork, and working together to achieve a goal. This is also the kind of a game where a couple of members of the family (and/or friends) can sit down and spend some time together having fun. I really would like to have a sequel to this game, and have Sony work on challenging EA for the title.
