Mario and Luigi Partners in time
SCORE: 73
Nintendo has cemented
their ability to create innovative, and fun games in almost every genre.
The role playing game genre is no exception to that. Mario & Luigi:
Partners in Time is the second handheld role playing game for the Mario
brothers. The first one Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga was on the Gameboy
Advance. There had been complaints by some that the GBA (Gameboy
Advance) version was too wide open, and players would get confused about
where to go next. Partners in Time addresses this, and makes sure that
the player knows where to go next, and can not get lost in the process
of going there. One of the nice aspects of this game is it does not rely
on the crutch of magic, instead special attacks are done with items.
The graphics in this game
are very bright and colorful. They are done with nice details. All of
the characters in this game have wonderful animations, so much so that
Disney could take some lessons from Nintendo. The artwork is classic
Mario & Luigi which is a very nice style indeed. The brothers jump on
the heads of the enemies, or hit them with a hammer. This falls under
cartoon style violence.
The sounds in Mario &
Luigi: Partners in Time are classic Mario & Luigi type sounds. Much of
the music is similar to the well known, well liked, and hummable music
from previous games. These sounds work well, and are extremely crisp and
clear.
Secrets abound all over
the place in this game. Most of these secrets are items that can be
used. The game is really about these items, so it is helpful to unearth
much of the items. This is a game that this reviewer feels is worth the
price of admission. Like a lot of role playing games, there is little
reason to replay once the game is finished. In defense of the RPG genre,
role playing games almost always take longer to beat. More than one save
is allowed, so more than one person can be working on this game.
The gameplay is where this
game really shines. Attacking the enemies, and defending against their
attacks is all about timing (and items). Press a button at a certain
time, and their attack is deflected back at them. Press a button at the
right time, and your attack will continue on to do more damage. The
level designs are also a marvel to witness in quite a few areas. This
reviewer had a lot of fun with this game.
The only real family
friendly factor issue with this game is the cartoon violence. Vanquished
enemies will vanish in a puff of stars. The back of the box says crude
humor, but this reviewer did not notice any personally. The Mario and
Luigi baby version act like babies, which may be where that comes from.
This is a game that more sequels are needed. It was a joy to play and
review this game. The baby versions of the brothers are taken care of
very well, and protected by their older selves. Stopping the evil
Shroobs from destroying the past is a fantasy style story that was
interesting. If the jumping on heads of cartoon style characters is a
problem, then please pass on this game.
