Fish Tycoon

I have wanted a fish tank for some time now, but since they are a bit expensive and my youngest son would probably knock it over I settled on playing Fish Tycoon on the Nintendo DS. I was extremely excited to be able to review this game, and get a real time fish tank (editor: albeit a digital one). Seven magical fish can be breed, fish can be sold in a store, and I got to care for the little fillets. Unfortunately this Majesco Entertainment video game is not up to par with their other Family Friendly video game titles.

The images in Fish Tycoon are grainy. The colors helped me tell some of the fish apart while playing. The only way I could tell a fish was dead was it was not swimming around. Not sure what happened to the belly up aspect that fish in real life perform. The graphics for the people coming into the store are also not very impressive. I did not find any offensive visuals, and there are some nice uses of colors inside Fish Tycoon.

I really liked the bubble sounds in Fish Tycoon. After a few hours of playing though it became a little disappointing that was the extent of the music to be found within Fish Tycoon. I listened for offensive audio bytes and found none. But then this is a section of the game that does not feel finished to this reviewer.

Fish Tycoon is very difficult, so much so that replaying it multiple times trying to find the correct formula will be the only way to get all seven magical fish. There are plenty of expensive items found within this game, but money is scarce and the fish do not sell for a lot. The game also demands the player check back quite often, otherwise a lot of the fish are dead. I left the game alone for twelve hours only to find almost all my fish sickly and/or dead.

Fish Tycoon does not leave any margin for error. There is no building of wealth in order to get the better fish. That is the biggest flaw in this game. Majesco Entertainment did not offer enough assistance in the help section. The items to be purchased are way overpriced, and the fish sell for too little. Combine those two, and this becomes a nearly impossible Nintendo DS game to enjoy. I really wanted to like this one too.

Morally and ethically it is a wonderful idea for a video game. Learning how to raise fish, and care for them are just the kind of lessons people need today. I just wish it had been a bit more realistic, and easy to play. Real fish do not need to be fed that many times a day, nor do they need to be medically treated that often. Great idea that falls short in the implementation.
