Drawn to Life

I am surprised that no one else has released a game like Drawn to Life on the Nintendo DS. THQ has certainly capitalized on the most natural application of the bottom touch screen of the DS in a customization scheme that makes the player more attached to the game. Platforms, spring boards, transportation machines, and a plethora of other items are drawn or colored by the player. The game will then animate these and they are used. Even the hero of the game is designed by the gamer.

The art work of what the player draws depends on how good of an artist you are. I have little to no artistic talent. The paint tool was pretty fun to play with though. The graphics made by the developer have a nice touch to them that made me feel like I was in this fantasy world. There is some Super Mario Bros. style cartoon violence. Enemies can be jumped on, or shot with a player drawn gun (editor: late in the game a sword is used). The core of the levels is exploration thankfully.

I totally adore the music found within Drawn to Life. It is upbeat, happy, and very encouraging. The Raposa routinely talk about the Creator of their world. An evil character arrogantly thought he could create better, and wound up bringing darkness to their world. This game is clear on how big of a mistake that is.

I was pleasantly surprised with the length of this game, and the amount of hidden secrets throughout the levels. There is a shop where plenty of items can be purchased that also add replay value to Drawn to Life. I feel this is a game that is worth your hard earned dollars.

The exploration of levels, and the village has some definitely intelligent design. Near the end of the game I was able to discern patterns and accurately pick what was to happen next, or where to look for secrets. The 2D platformer only has so many options so that is part of the issue. The controls work well, especially the drawing aspect of this game. I had a lot of fun playing Drawn to Life, and believe you will as well.

I love how Drawn to Life has a Creator in the game, and teaches rebelling against the Creator is wrong. There is also an underlying theme of growing into responsibility, and helping those in need. Drawn to Life is the kind of a video game that can be enjoyed by family members of most all ages. A basic reading ability is needed to understand the story, and where to go next. I would love to see a sequel to this game, and will be recommending it to my pastor.
