Bomberman DS

Bomberman is one of the very few characters that has kept his roots in the video game world. In the newest version of his bombing action, Hudson brings you a classic Bomberman style of gameplay! The rules are simple, like most classic Bomberman titles. Get from point A to point B, while blasting obstacles and enemies! Bomberman gameplay has always been simple and fairly family friendly. This version is no different. There are ten worlds in this game, with ten levels each. All of them have a random map generator, so you never get the same level. There is a downside to this. The gameplay, after so many levels feel the same. Multiplayer is present, but disappointing. The story is really unclear and hard to understand. The Bomb Crystal (a magical source), has shattered. With out the crystal, the planet has been shrouded in darkness. Bomberman is going to save the day!

The visuals of Bomberman DS are in a way, nice and different, but have an out dated feel. The colors and characters move along great, but did not take full advantage of the Nintendo DS. The different locations of the game all have their own unique backgrounds. The graphics do color and shade nicely, and there were no offensive images. The game is somewhat laggy, so you will see it here and there. The menus also have a very cartoonish look to them. They consist of metallic backgrounds, and Bomberman themes.

The sounds of Bomberman are not what they could be. The music is very annoying, and the sound clips of Bomberman made me turn the volume down frequently. What is worse is Bomberman won’t be quiet. The bad part is, the music does not change until you go to the next area. Ten levels of the same annoying music. The problem is, most levels take about three to five minutes. The sound effects are also drab, too. The bomb explosions sound like they came from the original Bomberman for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). No offensive sounds were made.

There is not much to this game. The greatest part of it is Multiplayer...if you can even find someone else with the game. The Nintendo Wifi-Connection would have been perfect for this. However, the decided not to. Players can download the game from your DS, but it is limited. Multiplayer mode, shockingly, was a bit disappointing. It is clean fun, with a cartoonish sense of action. Players can still have fun, while keeping it family friendly.

Controls were not well planned. You use both the control buttons AND the touch screen. It makes it hard to play. You can use the items you collect before the level starts, to be prepared. If your items are lost in gameplay, you can get another one, but this requires you to run from enemies, and bombs while touching the screen to get items from your menu. On the good side, the controls are very responsive and clean, so no worries of slippery feeling gameplay. They could have done a better job at this, but failed at delivering the solid gameplay Bomberman used to have.

In short: This game could have been a lot better. It had potential to be a big hit! Bomberman DS is not the best, but if you are into collecting, get it. This game is available at most game stores, but if you cannot find it, check Amazon.com or Ebay.com. I wish they spent a little more time on this. It is not a terrible game, but not good. Addiction is possible, since it saves every five levels.
