World Tour 2006

The cover of World Tour Soccer 2006 on the Playstation Portable (PSP) pretty much says it all. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has scored a GOAL!!! The excitement of getting that round, black and white ball into that guarded goal is certainly satisfying indeed. This is coming from someone who has never liked soccer. World Tour Soccer 2006 made this soccer skeptic a believer. The World Cup is heating up worldwide (editor: at the time this was written), and this portable game is perfect for ushering that in. The first thing most gamers will notice is how quickly they can get into the game, and how fast paced it is.

The graphics are very bright and colorful. The 3D models of the players, stadiums, and referees are done extremely well (especially consider this is on a portable). In addition, the details stack up quite well. The artwork is realistic, and completely safe for the entire family. Wholesome images are used properly. The celebrations that players make when the goals are scored are realistic, and family friendly.

The sounds are perfectly crisp and clear. The announcers have relevant, and really cool comments on the game. The sounds work amazingly well. The music is pleasant throughout the game. There was nothing this reviewer found offensive about the sounds in this game at all. It is really nice to have a game like this where authority figures are treated with respect by the players.

Casual gamers will find this a really fun game that can be played quickly (extremely important for the hand held), and hardcore gamers will find enough depth to keep them both busy for months. The different modes, and ways to play this game are simply astounding - especially when one realizes this is on a portable system. Gamers can also play one another wireless, and online. This is the kind of game that this reviewer feels is worth your hard earned dollars. Playing half of what is in this game will get your money's worth.

The controls are very quick and responsive. The one warning I have about the controls is don't button mash. Pressing 'X' twice in a row will cause two passes to happen, instead of one. Which is a good thing actually, for it trained me to be a little more calm while trying to score with a few seconds left in the game. The design of the controls work perfectly. If you are familiar with the Playstation layout, then you are fine. I found this game is a total, and complete blast to play. Planning complex strategies are also pretty easy to enact (like run at the goal from the right side, pass left quickly once the goalie comes out, and have that player score the goal).

Soccer is one of the least violent sports in the world, and it is the most popular sport in the world as well. Penalties are called, and the violence is at a bare minimum (accidentally tripping over another player). This game teaches geography, along with the sport of soccer. This game is safe for the entire family, and this reviewer would recommend it to a pastor. It was a joy to play, and review this game. A sequel in a year would be most welcome indeed. World Tour Soccer 2006 on the PSP earns our Family Friendly Gaming seal of approval.
